Two New Edited Volumes at the Metaphor Papers

Two new edited volumes in the Metaphor Papers series address current issues at the intersection of metaphor theory, religious studies, and cultural history. The contributions focus on the role of profession and “way” metaphors in religious discourse.

The special issue Professions as Religious Metaphors examines how professions serve as a source of religious metaphor. From architects, kings, and blacksmiths to shepherds and zookeepers, the contributions show how professional roles and social relationships across different religious and historical contexts—from Mesopotamia to the present—are used to conceptualize divine-human relations, spiritual practice, and notions of salvation. The volume was edited by members of Section C of the Collaborative Research Centre.

The edited volume Conceptualizing CONDUCT OF LIFE through WAY Metaphors from Section A focuses on the “way” metaphor as a central structuring principle of religious thought. The contributions explore how religious traditions conceptualize the course of life as movement along a path—with all its challenges, detours, and spiritual destinations. The volume demonstrates how the “way” metaphor simultaneously expresses moral guidance, spiritual development, and divine direction.
