CRC Coordinator Maren Jordan Receives Research Award for Her Work on the Demographic Transition in Oman

The CRC 1475 “Metaphors of Religion” warmly congratulates its coordinator, Maren Jordan, on receiving the Frobenius Research Prize awarded by the Frobenius Institute for Cultural Anthropology.

In her award-winning dissertation, “Temporalities of Reproduction: Fertility Transformations across Generations in the Sultanate of Oman”, Jordan examines how family, marriage, and reproductive conceptions and practices in Oman have changed since the 1970s. Her research demonstrates that the decline in birth rates cannot be explained solely by economic or educational developments, but also points to profound cultural and social transformations.
Combining quantitative analyses with ethnographic fieldwork in a central Omani oasis town, her dissertation provides nuanced insights into gender roles, intergenerational relations, and the socio-demographic change in the contemporary Arab Gulf region.
