Bicycle disciples & transport evangelists? – Mobility meets religious studies

What does religion have to do with the transport revolution? In this interdisciplinary event as part of Berlin Science Week 2025, mobility and religious studies come together. Together, we explore how mobility is shaped by culture, religion, and society – beyond technical solutions.

Between everyday life, politics, and beliefs, we discuss how mobility is viewed in different religious traditions. Can you get to heaven by car? At the same time, we ask to what extent the debate about the transport revolution is rooted in quasi-religious dogma and which religious metaphors shape it—from bicycle disciples to transport apostles.

What perspectives open up when we rethink mobility: sustainable, meaningful, and open to diversity? What can we learn from religions in this regard, and where do they stand in the way of change?

The event, organized jointly by CERES, CRC 1475 “Metaphors of Religion,” and Mobilitätshaus GmbH, will take place as a hybrid event.
