Keynote Lecture:Blending and Compression: Fitting the Divine to the Human Mind – Mark Turner Human beings possess biological, local, here-and-now minds, yet religious thought depends upon vast, transcendent structures spanning immense ranges of causation, agency, time, and space. How do constrained primate brains achieve ideas of the divine? The answer lies in advanced conceptual blending and its powers of mental compression. By selectively integrating distinct, often conflicting mental spaces, human cognition compresses diffuse, intractable conceptual webs into tight, human-scale mental tools. The compressed blend is tractable, can be carried mentally, and is available for unpacking to connect to vast conceptual networks that would otherwise lie beyond human cognition. This presentation will review the processes of these mental operations and provide a guided tour of highlights in religious thinking.
