ssion: Fitting the Divine to the Human Mind – Mark TurnerHuman beings po
 ssess biological\, local\, here-and-now minds\, yet religious thought depe
nds upon vast\, transcendent structures spanning immense ranges of causati
on\, agency\, time\, and space. How do constrained primate brains achieve
ideas of the divine? The answer lies in advanced conceptual blending and i
ts powers of mental compression. By selectively integrating distinct\, oft
en conflicting mental spaces\, human cognition compresses diffuse\, intrac
table conceptual webs into tight\, human-scale mental tools. The compresse
d blend is tractable\, can be carried mentally\, and is available for unpa
cking to connect to vast conceptual networks that would otherwise lie beyo
nd human cognition. This presentation will review the processes of these m
ental operations and provide a guided tour of highlights in religious thin
