CERES-Palais, Raum "Ruhrpott" (4.13)

Guest Lecture by Dr. Lucien van Beek (Leiden University)

Conceptual Metaphors and the Origins of Juridical Terminology

What is the conceptual relation between straightness and justice? In which ways can crimes be conceptualized? In my presentation, I will study material from ancient juridical texts and vocabulary to shed light on these and similar questions. I will illustrate how insights from Conceptual Metaphor Theory, in combination with lexical and etymological analysis, may help us understand how early juridical thought developed in the (pre)history of Indo-European languages, and how vocabulary in this domain was coined.
