In this talk\, I will bring together a series of stud ies on metaphor comprehension to explore its temporal dynamics and underly ing mechanisms. Drawing on evidence from neuropragmatics\, I will argue th at understanding metaphor involves inferential and predictive processes th at fine-tune lexical-semantic representations and support the construction of implicatures. I will examine how these processes unfold over time and how their trajectories vary with individual characteristics and properties of the metaphors themselves. Extending this account beyond propositional meaning\, I will discuss evidence for the contribution of mental imagery. Particular attention will be given to clinical populations\, in which intr usive visual imagery may interfere with predictive mechanisms and contribu te to atypical metaphor processing. Sie verfügt über eine sprachwissenschaftlich belegte Grammatik mit den Lautsprachen äquivalent en Phänomenen auf allen Ebenen: von der Phonologie\, über die Syntax bis hin zur Pragmatik. Besonders aufgrund des Diskurses über den Ikonizität sgehalt der visuell-gestischen Sprache\, ist die Betrachtung von Metaphern in der DGS von Interesse. Wir erforschen diese im Rahmen eines von der DF G geförderten Projekts auf Basis von Korpusdaten und experimentellen Stud ien. Zudem haben wir in weiteren Studien den Fokus auf religiöse Metapher n gelegt und zeigen in diesem Vortrag anhand verschiedener Beispiele\, was genau Double Mapping hinsichtlich der Kombination von ikonischem und meta phorischem Mapping bedeutet\, wie verschiedene Varianten einer Gebärde so wie die metaphorische Nutzung des konzeptuellen Raumes zur Realisierung re ligiöser Ausdrücke genutzt werden und wie die Vorstellung theologischer Konzepte die Ausführung der jeweiligen Gebärden beeinflusst. It argues that soteriological goals such as mok ṣa or nirvāṇa are complex systems of conceptual metaphors that are de rived from bodily experiences of the material world. We will analyse prima ry metaphors of mind and meditation in early Indic soteriology and then cr itically inspect them to show how such metaphors were constructed within r eal-world agrarian and urban economies in the early first millennium. The lecture explores how these and other basic conceptual metaphors arise from sensory experience in physical environments and from preconceptual struct ures (e.g. up/down) derived from visceral human practices and embodiment. Drawing on the framework of conceptual metaphor theory\, the talk employs tools such as image-schema (pre-linguistic or pre-verbal)\, domain-mapping \, root metaphors\, metaphor networks and blended metaphors to understand simple and complex variations such as ‘seeds of karma’\, ‘clouds of dharma’\, or ‘ladders of liberation’\, giving us access to the deep semantic field of these common images. Using metaphor theory to analyse me ditation texts enriches understanding of both text and embodied world-maki ng. On the one hand\, we see that meditation was materially determined\, a nd textual metaphors tell us about the material world in which they were p roduced. On the other hand\, it is only through conceptual metaphors that the abstractions of soteriology can sustain meaning. The resulting structu ral and functional analysis is to ‘denaturalise’ certain assumptions a bout meditation\, including ‘mystical’ foundations. The connection bet ween protasis and apodosis is established through correspondences based on similarity\, reflecting a mode of analogical thinking rooted in a culture -specific analogistic ontology. Central to this "Babylonian analogism" is the idea that similarities between words\, concepts\, and things reveal me aningful connections among them. For the modern reader\, however\, direct one-to-one correspondences between protases and apodoses are often difficu lt to reconstruct\, since omen logic operates through overlapping and inte rwoven networks of associations. This paper examines the role of metaphor in establishing these connections through a series of case studies drawn f rom different types of divinatory texts and from different historical peri ods\, intending to identify broader patterns in the construction of omen m eaning. Both have in common that thy break down the semantics of source and target doma in into smaller pieces (metaphorically speaking)\, which are called frame elements in frame semantics. The selective mapping from aspects of the sou rce domain to aspects of the target domain that is at the heart of Concept ual Metaphor Theory can be modelled in terms of frame elements from a fram e-semantic point of view. In this session\, we discuss how we could fruitf ully apply such approaches for metaphor annotation in the CRC.
